Artist Statement:
2D photography pieces inspired by my love of photography. As I travel the world, I love taking pictures to remind me of the things I’ve seen along my journey through life. I draw to combine what I’ve seen with ghosts from the past to tell a story that can’t be seen in a photograph.
My jewelry is inspired by extant medieval and renaissance pieces and paintings. As I traveled, I was taken aback by some of the artistic masters throughout history and how not only their paintings, but jewelry stood the test of time, a piece of themselves and their abilities on display thousands of years later, truly an amazing legacy. As I wondered through museums, I caught glimpses of jewelry in pieces of art such as those marvelous necklaces and collars drawn by Lucas Cranach the Elder, and I thought how amazing it would be to create what these artists drew. I set out to learn the craft and made many amazing pieces, unfortunately what I have left are the hurried leftovers from my class, not the best pieces but a representation of the beginnings of my works from years past. One day I hope to continue making new creations from old paintings as time allows, currently I only work on request.
My ceramics pieces are inspired by historical pieces with a modern spin. While I was exploring the upper Amazon region of Ecuador, I was again exposed to a revelation. I was surrounded by iron and gold, but the items held most sacred by the people were those made of simple clay, ceramics molded and formed by their hands, hardened by fire and given to those they love. It made me think differently of the ceramics pieces I had seen previously as cheap containers to hold items and cook with adopted a new meaning, I wanted to learn to make items with clay and craft them into items beautiful and useful for our home.
The juxtaposition of these different works of art in different media and genres come together to show the breadth and depth of my artistic abilities in this exhibit.
