CINDY SMALL

These pieces reflect my interest in changing the narrative of the original photograph. They are all vintage photos of women, formally composed in a studio. During a time of intense challenges, I find that most of us have this "public face" which hides the truth of our emotions. Women in particular, have been encouraged to maintain this public face in order to be taken seriously both personally and professionally. "The emotional woman" is used as an insult and as a reason to not allow women to be in power. I wanted these photos to strip away the socially-acceptable polite veneer and expose the raw rage, grief, and fear that settles under the skin.
