MATT JOHNSON

Over the years (and through evolutions in style, approaches, and imagery) the constant in my work are the depictions of environments that surround me.  I am compelled to record my life through these places and things. Stark cellphone towers, explosive wildfires, family photos, political events, and mylar balloons; all have influenced my art works. This most recent group of paintings is a reflection on our state of political affairs over the last few years. The balloons are used to reference the action by politicians of floating a "trial balloon". This is usually done as a "leak" to the press and is an easy way for leaders to test the public's appetite for a particular program, ideology or direction they may want to take the country. I use the imagery of balloons to aid in my critique of these ideas or decisions. Hopefully the paintings will spark conversations and heighten people's awareness around what is happening in our government and the ramifications these decisions may have on our future.
